What the Heck is this place?

I’m the High Functioning Dumbass, the HFD GooRoo, the father, the husband, the black belt, and a man with many experiences, mistakes, and stories.

I’m still making an effort, still learning, and still working toward mastery while staying curious about what I don’t know. Let visitors meet a person they can relate to.

Christian is also the coach. In that role, I’m here to help you get out of your own way through conversation, curiosity, and questions. You do the discovering and make your own decisions, with a little help creating space to hear yourself, challenge your assumptions, and choose your next step.

Scott Cardero

Scott Cardero is my alias and creative voice: the man at the intersections of experience, humour, mistakes, and reflection. Through that voice, I share what I’ve learned, why I learned it, and what I’m still trying to understand. I want people to see that we figure things out at different times, and that’s okay.

The blog is a cornerstone of this website. It holds the thoughts, efforts, stories, and perceptions that might help you—or someone you know. It also exists because I enjoy writing, exploring ideas, and finding humour in being human.

The Elephant in the Room: Why "The High Functioning Dumbass"?

Let’s be honest—the world of personal development is packed with flawless "gurus" who claim to have life perfectly figured out. That’s not what you’ll find here. I’m a High Functioning Dumbass. I’ve made the mistakes, taken the wrong turns, and learned things the hard way. Why put that right on the label? Because it is a hell of a lot easier to open up to someone who is willing to call themselves a dumbass first. There are no pedestals here, no judgment, and absolutely zero pretense.

The Two-Headed Snake

You might notice this operation has two distinct sides, and that is entirely by design. One head of the snake is the structured, professional coaching—the side that gets you organized, builds actionable plans, and pushes you across the finish line. The other head is the HFD philosophy: raw, unfiltered, and intensely approachable. We built it this way because we want this space to be for everyone. Not everyone is ready for a clipboard and a rigid, multi-week coaching program. Sometimes, you just need a real, grounded conversation to get your bearings before you start doing the heavy lifting.

The HFD Principle

Our core mission is shockingly simple: to help. Whether you need a sounding board to untangle the noise in your head, or a focused strategy session to tackle a massive life goal, we have a path that fits exactly where you are right now.

Come as you are, bring the mess, and let's figure it out.

The Black Belt Mindset (And The White Belt Reality) Christian isn’t just a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu; he’s earned his black belt in a few other aspects of life, too. But he is also the very first to admit he is still a white belt in plenty of others. In Jiu-Jitsu, there is massive respect for anyone who ties on a white belt and steps onto the mat willing to try, fully acknowledging they are starting from scratch. That exact zero-bias respect is how we approach every single client.

If you know nothing about coaching, know this: it isn’t therapy. I am not here to give you advice, break you down, or analyze your past. You are the expert on you, and you know yourself better than anyone else ever could. My job is to stand on the mat with you, figure out what goals you actually want to tackle, and get you moving forward—using your words and your truth.
